Why Sharwil Is Different

Sharwil isn’t just another avocado — it’s Hawaiʻi’s premium variety.

Volcanic South Kona Soil

Grown in the mineral-rich volcanic soil of the Kona Coast, giving the fruit a unique terroir you can taste.

Naturally High Oil Content

This creates that signature rich, buttery flavor and smooth melt-in-your-mouth experience.

Smaller Seed, More Fruit

A significantly smaller seed compared to other varieties means you get more edible avocado in every fruit.

Hand‑picked & Tree‑Ripened

Hand-picked at the peak of the season (Nov–April) to ensure optimal quality and flavor.

Delicious Avocados from
the Big Island

Big Island Avocado, LLC, stands out from the rest because we are “keeping it local”. We can supply large and wholesale buyers on a weekly basis all season long. We pride ourselves on ensuring a reliable supply of LOCALLY GROWN avocados right here on the Big Island of Hawaii.

Our Story

A Family Legacy, A Childhood Dream, and a Life Rooted in South Kona

Volcanic South Kona Soil

From the Rice Fields of California to the Slopes of South Kona

Our story begins in the Sacramento Valley, where Tom Atkinson and his daughter Tara farmed rice under the well‑known Hinode brand. Their work in agriculture eventually brought them to Hawaiʻi in the late 1990s — – a trip that would quietly plant the seeds for a new chapter.

Early avocado groves in South Kona

Discovering the Magic of South Kona

While spending time on the Big Island, Tom and Tara fell in love with the land and began purchasing small avocado groves in South Kona. The region’s volcanic soil, gentle climate, and the incredible Sharwil variety captured their hearts. What started as a side project slowly became a passion.

A Childhood Dream Realized

In 2010, Peter entered the picture.

As a young boy, he dreamed of becoming an avocado farmer — long before he ever imagined Hawaiʻi would be part of his life. When he and Tara began dating, he learned that her family already farmed avocados in South Kona. It felt like fate.

Building a Life Rooted in the Land

Soon after, Peter began purchasing small avocado groves of his own. One grove became two. Two became more. And before long, Tara and Peter were living in Hawaiʻi full‑time, farming side‑by‑side with Tom and growing the fruit that had connected all their stories.

A Family Story You Can Taste

From rice fields to avocado groves, from California to South Kona, from a childhood dream to a family legacy — every Sharwil we grow carries a piece of our story.

Although mother nature can be unpredictable we expect the first delivery in the middle of October, but all things farming are weather dependent, so please confirm prior to placing your order when our season will begin.
Our final delivery is typically the end of April, but all things farming are weather dependent, so we will keep you updated as the year progresses.
