Why Sharwil Is Different

Sharwil isn’t just another avocado — it’s Hawaiʻi’s premium variety.

Volcanic South Kona Soil

Grown in the mineral-rich volcanic soil of the Kona Coast, giving the fruit a unique terroir you can taste.

Naturally High Oil Content

This creates that signature rich, buttery flavor and smooth melt-in-your-mouth experience.

Smaller Seed, More Fruit

A significantly smaller seed compared to other varieties means you get more edible avocado in every fruit.

Hand‑picked & Tree‑Ripened

Hand-picked at the peak of the season (Nov–April) to ensure optimal quality and flavor.

Our Story

Built on a Passion for Farming

A Family Legacy, A Childhood Dream, and a Life Rooted in South Kona

Big Island Avocado is a family-owned farm dedicated to growing premium Sharwil avocados in the heart of South Kona, Hawaiʻi. Our orchards thrive in the region’s rich volcanic soils, abundant sunshine, cool mountain breezes, and ideal growing conditions—an environment recognized for producing some of the finest avocados in the world.

More than thirty years ago, Tom Atkinson discovered the agricultural potential of South Kona and began planting avocado orchards with a simple vision: grow exceptional fruit while caring for the land that makes it possible. What started as a small farming venture has grown into a professionally managed operation focused on producing consistently high-quality Hawaiian avocados.

Today, the next generation continues to build on that foundation. Tom’s daughter, Tara, lives and works on the farm, overseeing the day-to-day care of the orchards and helping guide the future of the business. By combining decades of farming experience with modern orchard management, food safety practices, and continual investment in the operation, we are committed to producing avocados that our customers can depend on year after year.

We believe exceptional fruit begins long before harvest. Every season is shaped by thoughtful orchard management—from pruning and tree nutrition to pest management, harvest timing, and careful packing. Each decision is made with one purpose: delivering outstanding flavor, excellent quality, and consistent results for every customer we serve.

Today we own and manage multiple orchards across South Kona, allowing us to maintain a dependable supply of premium Sharwil avocados throughout the season while preserving the attention to detail that only a family-owned farm can provide. Every avocado is harvested at the proper stage of maturity, carefully packed, and shipped with the same level of care we would expect ourselves.

Whether you’re a wholesale distributor, grocery retailer, foodservice company, or local market, we understand that consistency matters. Our customers rely on us for dependable supply, professional service, and locally grown fruit that represents the very best of South Kona agriculture.

As demand for locally grown Hawaiian produce continues to grow, our mission remains simple: to produce exceptional South Kona Sharwil avocados, care for the land that sustains them, and build lasting relationships with customers who value quality, integrity, and reliability.

Thank you for supporting local agriculture and for choosing Big Island Avocado. We are proud to share the harvest of South Kona with our community and customers throughout Hawaiʻi.
